Avalon! Workshop review time <3

Wednesday 21 February, 2024

Oh my it was so nice meeting with you all at Fincan last Saturday! Thanks for joining me. I threw a lot your way and you all hung in there! Here’s a little document about what we covered on Saturday. Practice the parts that resonate with you and use them in your playing, of this song and others! Above all have fun 😉

Workshop outline:

  • Basic strum pattern (island strum or calypso strum)
  • Pluck strum pattern (thumb strum)
  • Learn the melody!
    • by singing (use the video above)
    • by playing it on the uke (use the video above)
  • Learn the chord melody! (We didn’t quite get to this!)
  • Ornaments!
    • triplet experimentation
    • use Calypso strum in-between melodic phrases (We didn’t get to this either!)
  • Avalon listening examples, plus, examples of modulation?

Basic strum pattern:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
D D U U D U

D = strum down with the index fingernail
U = strum up with the thumbnail

Pluck strum, or Thumb strum:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
P D P D P D P D
C E C E <-- which string to pluck, when

P = pluck with the thumb
D = strum down

Triplet experiments!

Replace quarter notes (simple down strums) with triplets:

1 2 3 TRP
1 2 TRP 4
1 TRP 3 4
TRP 2 3 4
Now, use triplets in the Basic strum pattern:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
D D U U TRP

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
D D U TRP D U

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
D TRP U D U

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 +
TRP D U U D U
a demo of my arrangement at full speed

Aaaaaaaaaand! If that weren’t enough! Listening examples of this tune:
